According to the International Vocabulary of Metrology (VIM) the definition of traceability is:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cproperty of a measurement result whereby the result can be related to a reference through a documented unbroken chain of calibrations, each contributing to the measurement uncertainty\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At first sight, this seems to be a relatively difficult definition where I think an example will help a lot, let\u2019s take the kilogram.<\/p>\n<h2>Measuring the kilogram<\/h2>\n<p>The Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) is the keeper of the international prototype of the kilogram called the \u201cGrand K\u201d. NMI\u2019s around the world send their version of kilogram to BIPM where they are calibrated against a working copy of the \u201cGrand K\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Accredited laboratories (like Minerva) have a reference kilogram that has been calibrated against another kilogram, which has again been calibrated against our Dutch prototype of the kilogram (again through a working standard).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 546px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" title=\"measuring the kilogram\" src=\"https:\/\/www.minerva-calibration.com\/images\/nieuws\/20\/large\/Alexei_Pianih_with_the_kilo_gmr4w_blockNr1.png\" alt=\"measuring the kilogram\" width=\"536\" height=\"357\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">mr. It has been Minerva\u2019s strategy since the founding of our laboratory to minimize the human dependency and improve efficiency through automation.<\/p>\n<h2>Automation in calibrations<\/h2>\n<p>We have implemented automation in two ways:<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 22px;\">1. Automated data acquisition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"automated calibrations data acquisition\" src=\"https:\/\/www.minerva-calibration.com\/images\/nieuws\/20\/large\/data_acquisition_gmr4w_blockNr1.png\" alt=\"automated calibrations data acquisition\" width=\"408\" height=\"272\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Automation perfectly fits into our striving to reduce measurement uncertainties. Obtaining more truly objective automatically collected measurements, both from our reference standards and the devices we calibrate, result in uncompromising results and ways to analyze data which are not doable through manual registrations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 22px;\">2.
